Masters Of Funk: Larry Dodson, The SOS Band & Midnight Star at Jacobs Pavilion

Celebrating Legends of Funk at Jacobs Pavilion Saturday, August 29th, 2026, when 'Masters Of Funk: Larry Dodson, The SOS Band & Midnight Star' bring the high-energy celebrants of these Legendary and Iconic Funk, Soul and R&B artists to perform the ultimate collection of Real Funk for the fans in attendance at this packed house of an event!

Larry Dodson

After losing their soul singer, Otis Redding, in the 1967 plane crash that killed him and almost the entire Bar-Kays, Larry Dodson was recruited to become the new lead singer of the legendary funk band. This event marked the beginning of a 30 plus year journey of funk that fans around the world can appreciate and dance to. As the lead singer of the Bar-Kays one of the greatest funk bands to ever perform live on stage, Larry Dodson has influenced many of the great artists in the genre. And today he continues to create the most amazing and danceable funk in the world. With multiple Grammy nominations the Bar-Kays were inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2004.

The SOS Band

Next up is The SOS Band! This incredible trio of musicians will bring the funky and soulful sounds of R&B and soul to Jacobs Pavilion for the event. The SOS Band is famous for their hit songs 'Just Be Good to Me', 'Take Your Time (Do It Right)', 'The Finest' and many more, that were popular across the decades. The groupâs music from the early 80âs is particularly superior to that of their peers from the time and went through a creative explosion with the release of the âDiamond in the Rawâ album, to display the bands musical capability and growth as musicians. The band has been called âSounds of Successâ or SOS Band for short, because the goal of the trio has always been to reach for success in their careers. The talented group has gotten praise from many famous artists and bands, as well as tons of achievements on the Billboard charts.

Midnight Star

Rounding out the evening of funk music to end all funk music is the legendary Midnight Star performing their hit songs like "Operator," "Freak-A-Zoid," and the title track to their platinum "No Parking on the Dance Floor" album. This Kentucky native group of students at Kentucky State University were the pioneers of the new "electro-funk" sound, which was the first to successfully merge the emerging electronic and synthesizer sounds with the high energy, danceable format of funk. Their many awards and accolades include several Soul Train Music Awards.

Jacobs Pavilion Information
