Leslie Edward Claypool is a world-renowned musician, best known as the founder and frontman of the metal band Primus. He is ranked among the greatest bassists of all time by Rolling Stone, gaining massive prominence in the 90s with their third album "Pork Soda" that came out in 1993. With his unique playing style that blends tapping, whammy bar bends, slapping, and flamenco-like strumming, he sure is a performer you gotta see live on stage.
With Primus, Claypool starred on bass, and is widely considered as the band's leader, leading their unique genre-bending adventure with funk tunes. With the man's strong rock influence, the band was often described as "thrash-funk" or "funk metal". Claypool expressed his dislike for such labels, "We've been lumped in with the funk metal thing just about everywhere. I guess people just have to categorize you," he shared with the press.
Through it all, Primus found massive success from 1989 to year 2000 before the band went on hiatus. Their biggest hits include "My Name Is Mud", "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver", "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver", and "Tommy the Cat".
In May 2000, Claypool formed Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, embracing experimental rock. The man put together the band for the Mountain Aire Festival in Angeles Camp at the tume, and later described the fellas as one "of the most incredible guys (he) could possibly find." Returning to his roots following the Primus hiatus, he played songs by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson, and called the act as his "mid-life crisis band. Making his way to the jam band scene and putting out hits that ooze the vibe of heavy, prog-rock madness.
In 2015, he formed The Claypool Lennon Delirium, after taking a year off after Primus' tour with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and Dinosaur Jr. Keeping in touch with Sean Ono Lennon, they kicked off a musical project, mashing up their ideas of an old-school, prog rock, and psychedelic record. In six weeks, they wrote and recorded ten songs which formed the Billboard-charting LP "Monolith of Phobos". On May 1st 2026, they'll be releasing their third LP, "The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy.
